In a small home, a spot cleaner has to earn its storage space. The best choice is not automatically the machine with the largest tank. It is the one you can carry, store, rinse and reach for quickly when a spill happens.

What a portable spot cleaner can—and cannot—do
A spot cleaner sprays diluted solution, agitates the surface and extracts liquid into a dirty-water tank. It is useful for spills and targeted areas, but it does not replace a full-size machine for wall-to-wall carpet. Results depend on the stain, fiber, cleaning history and how much liquid you recover.
Check the upholstery care label before using water. A “W” or “WS” code generally allows water-based cleaning, while “S” and “X” materials need a different approach. Test a hidden area, avoid oversaturating cushions and make several suction-only passes.
What to measure before buying
- Storage footprint: measure width, depth and height with the hose wrapped
- Carry weight: a filled tank adds several pounds
- Hose reach: longer helps on stairs but takes more space to store
- Tank opening: larger openings are easier to scrub and dry

Our current recommendation
For most small homes, choose the Little Green Max Pet. Choose the Mini when storage decides, CleanSlate Plus for larger fabric panels, or StainStriker when its formula system suits your stains. Pet Pro is worth its extra size only when larger tanks will be used regularly; the original Little Green is the fallback when its price is meaningfully lower.
