Does a bread box need to be airtight?
Not necessarily. Bread storage is a balance: too much open air dries a loaf, while trapped moisture can encourage mold. Many bread boxes use small vents, loose-fitting lids or textured bases to moderate airflow rather than creating a food-storage-container seal. The loaf type, room humidity and how quickly you eat it still matter.
